Shoulder pain is a very common complaint that affects people of all ages and lifestyles and has been quite prevalent with our clients here at Longevtiy Nexum. Whether you’re an office worker, an athlete, or a stay-at-home parent, you’ve likely experienced shoulder discomfort at some point in your life.

However, it’s essential to recognize that shoulder pain is not a condition in itself but rather a symptom of various underlying issues. In this blog, we are going to highlight common symptoms of shoulder pain, likely causes of shoulder pain and how exercise can be used to help manage this pain.

Symptoms of Shoulder Pain

The symptoms of shoulder pain can vary depending on the underlying cause, but common indications include:

  • Dull, aching, or sharp pain in shoulder joint
  • Limited range of motion
  • Weakness in the affected arm
  • Swelling and tenderness around the shoulder
  • Clicking or popping sounds during movement
  • Pain that worsens at night or with specific activities

Likely Causes of Shoulder Pain

  • Rotator Cuff Injuries: Injuries to the rotator cuff can result from overuse, trauma, or age-related wear and tear.
  • Frozen Shoulder: This is characterized by stiffness and pain in the shoulder joint, leading to limited mobility.
  • Bursitis: The bursa is a fluid-filled sac that cushions the tendons and muscles around the shoulder joint. When this becomes inflamed, it will lead to pain and restricted the movement.
  • Osteoarthritis and Rheumatoid Arthritis: Shoulder pain can also stem from arthritis, either osteoarthritis (wear and tear) or rheumatoid arthritis (an autoimmune disease). Both conditions cause joint inflammation, leading to pain, stiffness, and reduced range of motion.
  • Fractures and Dislocations: Traumatic events, such as falls or accidents, can result in shoulder fractures or dislocations, causing severe pain and immediate loss of function.

Remember that early intervention and a proactive approach to shoulder health, including regular exercise and proper body mechanics, can help prevent and alleviate shoulder pain, allowing you to enjoy a more active and pain-free life.
