When most people visit our clinic, they’re focused on one thing: getting out of pain.Whether it’s shoulder pain, knee pain, or back pain, the goal is usually to move better and get back to doing what they love. While that’s certainly one of our priorities at Longevity Nexum, we also know the strong connection between exercise and cholesterol, heart health, and long-term wellness.
One of our clients recently reminded us just how powerful those benefits can be.
A Story That Goes Beyond Shoulder Pain
This client originally came to us because of ongoing shoulder pain. Over time, his strength improved, allowing him to function better in his day-to-day life. However, his shoulder pain never completely resolved.
Based on recommendations from other healthcare providers, it’s likely that surgery will eventually be needed to fully address the underlying issue.
Rather than letting that discourage him, we shifted our focus.
Instead of concentrating solely on his shoulder, we began working toward improving his overall health through regular exercise and strength training.
At his next routine blood work appointment, he received some unexpected news.
His cholesterol levels had dropped significantly.
In fact, the improvement was enough that his family physician determined he no longer needed the statin medication he had previously been prescribed—something he had been hoping to achieve.
While every person’s situation is different, it was a great reminder that the benefits of exercise often extend well beyond the reason someone first walks through our doors.
Exercise and Cholesterol
Regular physical activity can have a significant impact on cardiovascular health by:
- Increasing HDL (“good”) cholesterol
- Lowering LDL (“bad”) cholesterol
- Reducing triglycerides
- Improving blood pressure
- Supporting healthy body weight
- Improving insulin sensitivity
These changes work together to reduce the risk of heart disease and improve overall health.
Understanding Cholesterol
Cholesterol often gets a bad reputation, but your body actually needs it.
Cholesterol helps produce hormones, vitamin D, and the membranes that surround every cell in your body.
The concern arises when certain types of cholesterol become elevated.
LDL (Low-Density Lipoprotein) is often referred to as the “bad” cholesterol because excess amounts can contribute to plaque buildup within arteries.
HDL (High-Density Lipoprotein) is known as the “good” cholesterol because it helps transport excess cholesterol back to the liver for removal.
Exercise is one of the few lifestyle interventions that can positively influence both.
What About Statins?
Statins are one of the most commonly prescribed medications in Canada for lowering cholesterol and reducing cardiovascular risk. For many people, they’re an important and effective part of treatment.
Like any medication, however, they can come with side effects. Some of the more common ones include:
- Muscle aches or soreness
- Muscle weakness
- Fatigue
- Joint pain
- Digestive upset
- Headaches
It’s important to remember that no one should stop taking a prescribed medication without speaking with their physician first. Exercise and medication often work together, and any decisions about treatment should always be made with your healthcare team.
Looking Beyond the Pain
This story perfectly reflects how we approach care at Longevity Nexum.
Our client came to us because of shoulder pain. Although we’re still working to help him maintain his strength and function while he considers future surgical options, our focus expanded beyond his shoulder.
We looked at his overall health.
Pain may be what brings someone into the clinic, but it doesn’t have to be the only thing we improve.
Our goal is to help our clients build strength, move with confidence, and develop healthy habits that support them for years to come. Sometimes that means less pain. Sometimes it means preparing for surgery. And sometimes it means opening your blood work and seeing improvements you never expected.
That’s the power of exercise.
It’s not just about feeling better today—it’s about building a healthier future.
