Is your sciatic pain controlling your life? Is your sciatic pain impeding your ability to work, do basic household chores, limiting the time you’re spending with your families or even driving in your car? If this sounds like you or someone you know, take the time to read this article to give you some positive hope that you don’t have to live with sciatic pain for the rest of your life and how exercise is the best medicine for sciatic pain.

In this article, we are going to explore the journey our client, Sage, embarked on with Longevity Nexum to help him overcome his debilitating sciatic pain. The Longevity Nexum team has been working with Sage for the last 18 months. He came to us with sciatic and lower back pain which impeded his ability to work or perform any activities of daily living.

What is Sciatic?

The sciatic is the largest nerve in the body that stems from the back of the pelvis down the leg. Sciatica is pain that originates along the sciatic nerve. The pain typically occurs when the nerve gets compressed or irritated causing discomfort and pain to starts in the lower back and runs down the length of the leg to the big toe. Common movements that would exacerbate any symptoms would include forward flexion, bending, twisting, coughing or sneezing.

Luckily, the use of exercise as medicine, Sage has now had his first child and has returned to work. Not only has he returned to physical activity, but is progressing exponentially with strength training and even running long distance. Throughout Sage’s sciatic recovery journey, we have asked him some questions that highlights the positive outcome of doing exercise to promote recovery.

Why did you come to Longevity Nexum?

“I had tried out 4 different Physical Therapy providers in my town, and hadn’t seen any results in a year. On top of that, they all tended to use techniques that I knew lacked strong evidence – “realignments”, postural analysis, TENS – with only a minimal focus on exercise. I had basically given up, and was one appointment away from scheduling surgery, when I saw one of Mitchell’s instagram stories talking about long-term injuries. I figured I’d give Longevity a shot as a last ditch effort, and boy did it pay off!”

How has Longevity Nexum impacted your life?

“In the months before starting with Longevity, I could barely sleep through the night because of my back pain. I was spending my days working from home on a laptop so that I could lay on the floor, because sitting in an office chair was unbearable. It’s not an exaggeration to say my life is completely different now.”

What are things that you can do now that you couldn’t do before working with Longevity Nexum?

“I could mention all my new gym PRs, and my return to distance running, but the biggest change is that I can easily pick my 4-month old son up off the ground without pain. I can wrestle with my 5-year old nephew,go on hikes with my family. Best of all, I have a structure and routine I can follow that hopefully keeps me doing those things for another 50 years!”

Would you recommend Longevity Nexum to your friends and family?

“In fact, I have! I’ve had multiple family members sign up with Longevity for injuries they had otherwise given up on resolving. If you have a friend or family member who seems resigned to living with pain, tell them there is still hope!”
