On average, most Canadians that are employed full time are sedentary for approximately 70% of their day. Do you fall in this category? If the answer is yes- here are some reasons to incorporate more movement/walking throughout your day:
-improve cardiovascular health
-strengthen bones
-reduce risk of chronic diseases
-improve blood flow
It might not always be possible to move while you’re working so here are some ways to increase your step count throughout the day:
-park further away
-set a timer every hour to remind yourself to start moving
-use the stairs when possible
-catch up with friends/family while walking
-listen to a podcast while walking
-share your activity on your smart watch with family/friends to stay motivated to keep moving
Minimal activity guidelines from the Canadian Society of Exercise Physiology are 150 mins of moderate-vigourous aerobic activity weekly. This could be broken into 10 minute walks after each meal or a
20-30 minute walk daily.
