If your winter routine feels nothing like it did in the summer or fall, you’re not imagining it—and you’re definitely not alone.
Maybe you were walking outside most days when the weather was warm. Maybe your workout class felt easy to get to when it was light out and you didn’t need three layers just to leave the house. Now it’s cold, it’s dark, it might be snowing, and suddenly the couch feels like the safest place to be. Add in comfort food, heavier meals, and low energy, and movement quietly slips to the bottom of the list.
This is what I call the winter cozy trap—and a lot of people fall into it.
Why Winter Changes Everything
Winter brings real, physical shifts. Shorter days, less sunlight, colder temperatures, and disrupted routines all affect energy and motivation. Walking outside isn’t as appealing when it’s icy or freezing. Driving to a workout class feels like a bigger commitment when the roads are bad or it’s already dark by dinner. Rest starts to feel necessary—and it is—but sometimes that rest slowly turns into inactivity without us even realizing it.
On top of that, winter food tends to be warmer, heavier, and more comforting. That’s normal. Our bodies crave warmth and energy when it’s cold. None of this means you’ve “lost discipline” or that something is wrong with you. It means you’re human.
You’re Not Lazy—You’re Seasonal
If your motivation is dipping, you’re in good company. Many people experience this every single winter. The problem isn’t that you stopped caring about your health—it’s that the environment changed, and your habits haven’t adjusted yet.
What often happens next is the waiting game:
“I’ll get back into it when spring comes.”
“When the weather improves, I’ll start again.”
“When I feel motivated, I’ll move more.”
But waiting for spring can turn into months of feeling off, sluggish, or disconnected from your body.
Choose You—Today, Not in Spring
Instead of counting down the days until the seasons change, this is your reminder that you’re allowed to choose yourself today—even in winter, even without motivation, even if it looks different than it used to.
Getting back into habits that support your health doesn’t mean recreating your summer routine. It means meeting yourself where you are now.
- Maybe movement looks like a shorter walk when the weather allows—or pacing indoors while listening to a podcast.
- Maybe it’s swapping one skipped workout for an at-home session or still showing up to class once a week instead of three times.
- Maybe it’s adding nourishing foods alongside comfort foods, not trying to eliminate them.
Small actions count. Consistency doesn’t have to be intense to be meaningful.
