Pregnancy is one of the most physically demanding seasons your body will ever go through. Your body is adapting daily, working around the clock to grow and support another life—and that deserves to be supported with movement, strength, and care.
Many women become hesitant to exercise during pregnancy because they’re unsure what is safe. But when approved by your doctor, strength training can be one of the most empowering things you do for both yourself and your baby.
Supporting Your Body Through Pregnancy
As your body changes, so do the physical demands placed on your muscles and joints. Simple daily tasks can start to feel more tiring, your posture shifts, and aches and pains can become more common.
Strength training helps your body adapt to those changes by building stability, improving posture, and maintaining muscle strength as your pregnancy progresses.
Many women find that staying active helps reduce:
- Low back pain
- Hip discomfort
- Muscle tension
- Fatigue
- Stiffness
- Feelings of physical de-conditioning
When your body feels stronger, everyday life feels more manageable—and that confidence matters during pregnancy.
Reducing the Risk of Gestational Diabetes
One of the most powerful benefits of exercise during pregnancy is its ability to help regulate blood sugar and reduce the risk of gestational diabetes.
During pregnancy, hormonal changes can make it more difficult for the body to manage blood sugar levels efficiently. Strength training helps your muscles use glucose from the bloodstream for energy, which can help keep blood sugar levels more stable.
Movement truly becomes medicine here. Every workout is an opportunity to support your health and your baby’s development at the same time.
For women who may feel nervous about a family history of diabetes or changes in their blood sugar during pregnancy, exercise can be an incredibly empowering tool. It reminds you that there are positive, proactive things you can do to support your health throughout pregnancy.
Lowering the Risk of Preeclampsia
Regular exercise during pregnancy has also been associated with a reduced risk of preeclampsia, a pregnancy complication involving high blood pressure.
Strength training and regular movement can help improve circulation, cardiovascular health, and blood pressure regulation throughout pregnancy. Staying active can also support healthy energy levels, sleep, stress management, and overall well-being—all important factors during this time.
Strength for Labor and Recovery
Labor is physically demanding. It requires endurance, strength, and resilience. Strength training helps prepare your body for that challenge by improving muscular endurance, breathing awareness, and overall body control.
And the benefits don’t stop after delivery.
Women who maintain strength and movement during pregnancy often feel more prepared for the physical demands of postpartum recovery and caring for a newborn. Staying active can help you maintain muscle mass, improve circulation, and feel more connected to your body during a major life transition.
Pregnancy Is Not a Time to Become Fragile
As a Kinesiologist who is currently 21 weeks pregnant with my first baby, I’ve experienced firsthand how much pregnancy can change your body, energy, and relationship with movement. My first trimester was challenging. Between the nausea, extreme fatigue, and food aversions, my workouts looked very different than they normally would. During that phase, movement meant giving myself grace and focusing on gentle walks, core work, and hip stability exercises when my body allowed it.
Now into my second trimester, I’m feeling stronger again and have gradually returned to strength training, longer walks, and even weekend volleyball games. This season of pregnancy feels empowering in a completely different way. I’m learning that movement during pregnancy isn’t about perfection—it’s about supporting your body through every phase and adapting when needed. Staying active has helped me feel more energized, more connected to my body, and confident knowing I’m taking care of both myself and my baby boy along the way!
