The benefits of walking are endless, so get ready to tie up your laces and make walking a part of your daily routine!
Whether your taking the dog for a walk, listening to your favourite podcast, or catching up with a family member or friend during a walk – you will feel better both physically and mentally. It gets better… it costs nothing to get started!
The Benefits of Walking
Walking 30 minutes daily can increase cardiovascular fitness, strengthen bones, reduce excess body fat, and boost muscle power and endurance. Walking also releases endorphins, which can help reduce stress and anxiety. It’s a great way to clear your mind before going into work and handle the daily stressors in life.
The Risks of A Sedentary Lifestyle
Prolonged sitting is linked to a higher risk of conditions such as heart disease, diabetes, and certain cancers. This is partly due to decreased metabolic rate and poor circulation. Extended periods of inactivity can also weaken the muscles and decrease flexibility. This will make activities of daily living more challenging to participate in.
Find a time that works best for you and make it a habit until it becomes a routine! This could be before work, on your lunch break, or after work. Put the running shoes in a visible place as a cue to remind you to walk, bring them to work, or set a reminder in your phone to get moving. If 30 minutes isn’t realistic at the start, do shorter duration walks more frequently to accumulate 30 minutes in the day.
Our team at Longevity Nexum will be hosting a monthly walk downtown Barrie by the waterfront and all are welcome! It’s a great way to meet like-minded people that are passionate about their health!
