September is Arthritis Awareness Month! As a Kinesiologist, I wanted to take a moment to raise awareness about the challenges many face that are living with arthritis, and how we can help! With millions affected worldwide, it’s essential to shed light on the importance of management strategies, including exercise, that can help improve one’s quality of life.

Living with arthritis can be incredibly challenging, especially when pain keeps you from doing the activities you love! Naturally, we want to protect ourselves from pain, which leads to disengaging in activities and becoming immobile. However, this is actually the worst thing we can do for our body!

The Impact of Exercise For Those Living With Arthritis

The key to managing and living with arthritis is to continue to stay active. Regular exercise will help to reduce pain and stiffness by increasing strength in the muscles to better support the joints. It will also help to maintain or improve your range of motion. Which will help you continue to get on and off the floor and pick things up off the ground.

Chronic pain can sometimes be accompanied by feelings of frustration or sadness. It’s not always easy getting started and taking that first step, but it will be the best thing for you long term! It may just take a shift in perspective. You could be someone who has arthritis and stops everything you love, or you could be someone who has arthritis and participates in regular exercise to mange the condition and continue to do the things you love. Who would you pick?

By engaging in regular exercise the body will release endorphins, which are natural mood boosters. This will help you manage the frustrations and feelings around your arthritis and help you get through tough days!
